WHO WE ARE
SMC Media Publishing is the academic publishing division of SMC Media, a Milan-based company with a long-standing track record in scientific communication, medical education, and editorial services. Whether we are editing journals ourselves or supporting the editorial teams of societies and publishers, our role is the same: to take care of the content and the process, so that research reaches readers efficiently, accurately, and with impact.
Hands-on, detail-oriented, we build on relationships with collaborators whose expertise has been sharpened over years in scientific publishing.
Strategic Partner
We partner with publishers and scientific societies to shape strategy for new journal launches or the relaunch of existing titles — tracking the market to spot niche opportunities and building tailored plans to grow visibility and impact.
Peer Review Management
We design and run efficient peer review workflows: managing reviewer assignments, monitoring review timelines, and supporting authors, editors, and reviewers at every stage of evaluation.
Production & Publication Support
From copyediting to typesetting and proofreading, we provide end-to-end production support so that every article meets the standards required for publication — delivered accurately and on time.
Dissemination & Editorial Marketing
We help published content reach its audience, using eTOCs, targeted newsletters, social media, and other tools to maximize visibility and readership.
MEET THE TEAM
Silvia Malosio
Publishing director
Silvia leads SMC Media's publishing activity, overseeing every title from strategic development through to production and distribution — the driving force behind the studio's editorial vision and its long-standing relationships with scientific societies and international publishers.
Valeria Brancolini
Executive Publisher
Valeria brings a scientific and research background in the life sciences to her role as Executive Publisher, with extensive experience across digital publishing, scholarly journals and books, open access, and scientific communication. Her career spans international research organisations and leading medical-scientific publishers, giving her a broad, cross-sector view of how modern academic publishing works — and how it should.
Marta Bottagisio
Managing Editor
Marta holds a PhD and spent years as a researcher, working in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal research with a focus on infection and biomaterials. That hands-on research background — including numerous peer-reviewed publications of her own — gives her a rare vantage point as an editor: she knows exactly what rigor, transparency, and methodological care look like from the author's side of the desk, and brings that perspective to every manuscript she manages.
Angelina Cardinale
Editorial Assistant
Fully trained in-house on the best practices, across journals, to provide reliable, hands-on support to authors, editors, and reviewers alike — the kind of steady, detail-focused presence that keeps the editorial process running smoothly at every stage.
Brenda Dionisi
Editorial Assistant, Language Editor
A journalist by education and of Canadian origin, Brenda is based in Italy and combines editorial support for Digestive and Liver Disease with language editing across other SMC Media journals — bringing a writer's precision and an international ear to every manuscript she touches.
Giulio Anesa
Webmaster, Layout Editor
With 22 years of experience as a graphic and web designer, Giulio is the technical backbone of SMC Media's digital presence — shaping how journals look, function, and perform online, from layout to user experience.
OUR APPROACH
Research deserves to be handled with rigor and respect. That conviction shapes everything we do.
Research integrity, first
Every editorial decision we make — from reviewer selection to publication timelines — is grounded in a strict adherence to the principles that protect the credibility of science: transparency, fairness, and accountability at every stage of the editorial process.
Best practice, always current
Scientific publishing doesn't stand still — reporting standards, peer review models, open access requirements, and research integrity guidelines evolve constantly. We stay close to that evolution, so the journals we work with are never caught behind it.
Combined with the values that have always guided us — dialogue, efficiency, care, flexibility — this is what allows us to be a genuine editorial partner, not just a service provider.
OUR TRACK RECORD
Over the years, SMC Media has worked as publisher, editorial manager, and editorial partner for a range of scientific journals, including titles indexed with meaningful Impact Factor and CiteScore recognition — spanning fields such as internal medicine, orthopaedics and traumatology, hematology, critical care, and gastroenterology.
Our collaborations span:
Scientific societies and academia — including major Italian and international research institutions and societies
Publishers — including established international publishing houses
LANGUAGE EDITING
Beyond automated editing: expert human revision for scientific publishing
Our Language Editing team is composed of experienced scientific editors who are native English speakers with extensive expertise in academic publishing. Reviewing is performed by qualified professional who understands not only the English language, but also the conventions, style, and clarity required for scientific communication. Unlike automated editing tools, our copyeditors apply critical judgment, interpret the author's intended meaning, identify inconsistencies, and refine the manuscript while preserving its scientific accuracy and the author's voice. The result is language editing that goes beyond grammar correction to improve readability, coherence, and overall manuscript quality.
